The Skincare Steps You Need Before Applying Makeup

Flaky foundation and patchy blush are usually prep problems, not product problems. Follow the routine SAGAR artists use before every shoot.

The Skincare Steps You Need Before Applying Makeup

Great makeup sits on great skin. You do not need a ten-step routine. You need the right order, enough wait time between layers, and products that match your skin type.

Cleanse and hydrate first

Always start with a gentle cleanse to remove overnight oil and leftover product. Follow with a hydrating toner or essence if your skin feels tight. Dry patches grab onto foundation and create that uneven, cakey finish everyone tries to cover with more concealer.

Never skip sunscreen

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen and wait at least five minutes before primer. Primer applied too soon on wet sunscreen pills and breaks apart by midday. In Indian summers, a lightweight, non-greasy formula makes the biggest difference.

Serum only where you need it

  • Hyaluronic serum for dehydration and fine lines
  • Niacinamide for oil control and uneven tone
  • A thin layer is enough. Excess product causes pilling under base makeup

Moisturizer matched to your skin type

Oily skin: gel moisturizer. Normal to combination: lightweight lotion. Dry skin: richer cream on cheeks, lighter texture on the T-zone. Let moisturizer absorb fully before primer.

Do not forget lip prep

Exfoliate lips gently once or twice a week. Before lipstick, apply a peptide lip treatment and blot excess. Smooth lips hold colour evenly and keep matte formulas comfortable through long days.
